Arthur Jay (A.J.) Winkelman Obituary (1940

Arthur Jay (A.J.) Winkelman, 83, passed away in the early morning hours on Thursday, March 1, 2024, in Lehi, UT after suffering a stroke on January 20, 2024 surrounded by the loving support of his wife, Linda and family. A.J. was born on August 28, 1940, in Van Nuys, CA to Jay William Winkelman and Eathel Lasson. He was the only son, with older sister, Eathel Arlene Winkelman Tidwell and younger sister, Pamela Georgia Winkelman Rowbotham. He spent his early years in California, then his family moved to Mt. Pleasant, UT, for a period of time. The family relocated to Glendale, CA where he attended and graduated from Hoover High and received his AA degree from Glendale College as preparation for a dental school program at USC. A.J. chose to go on a 2-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was called to go to South Australia. It was an amazing experience under the leadership of Elder Bruce R. McConkie, his Mission Pres. It was a highlight in his life, serving the Lord full time. Returning from his mission, he enrolled in Brigham Young University (BYU), Provo, UT where he made great friends. Together they formed the BYU Cougar Club sponsored by the BYU Director of Athletics. A.J. served as the first Secretary. Details were important and A.J. was a meticulous note taker, avid reader, and involved in the community. While attending BYU he met a girl, Geraldine (Gerri) Reid, that caught his eye. They were married in 1964 in the Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They had 3 children, Wendy Ellen Winkelman Coulston, Tracy Ann Winkelman Berkley and Corey Jay Winkelman. They were divorced after 16 years of marriage. He changed his major to Business Administration and graduated with a BS Degree in Business Management from BYU in 1965, and graduated with a MBA in 1974 from Pepperdine University. In the fall of 1980, he was contacted by Linda Sue Rosenburg, from his former Church ward. She was called to be the chairman of a 50-year reunion and requested to find former members. She invited him to attend. They started dating and were married 6 weeks later in the Los Angeles CA Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had two children, Troy Edward Rosenburg and Jason David Rosenburg. They added 4 more children to their blended family: Alicia Janae Terry, Joy Lyn Winkelman, Austin Jay Winkelman and Angela Janelle Winkelman. A.J. was a perfect gentleman and treated his wife like a queen. A.J. was a great father, always with his attention on the needs of the family. Homework, sports, church and school activities were well attended. He was a real helper and got the children to assist him. Anonymous service was always his motto. Life was busy but happy! His career was varied throughout his life. He started with International Banking, but he found he liked the marketing side working with pharmaceuticals and blood derivatives with Upjohn, Hyland-Baxter USA, Travenol International. Later his family moved to Springfield, VA to work for the Red Cross in Washington DC, HQ, managing the blood derivatives program for the US. He also started his own company, Preferred Services. In business and retirement, he traveled the world. Weekly date nights were tradition. Outings to the beach, to visit his children in CA on business trips and vacations, campouts, hunting, reunions-family time. Grandpa and Grandma’s summer camp for all the grandchildren (parents not invited) that could come to play, explore - so fun. A.J. was an amazing person, he was fun, selfless, caring, generous, intelligent and treated everyone with dignity and respect. He enjoyed the outdoors, teaching the kids about nature, knot tying, rocks and the stars. He served in many Church callings and honored his Priesthood. He volunteered 37 years in the Boy Scouts, helping many young men achieve Eagle Scout. But most of all, he was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He lived what he believed, serving family and others with unconditional love. He served in the Los Angeles, Washington DC and Provo Temples. He took great pleasure in helping others, investing himself in charitable services such as “Lazarus at the Gate”, that included collecting provisions from stores to sort and handout to the homeless of Washington, DC. Toting his family along, to show them the rewards of service, care and support for those in need. A lesson that will live on in them forever. He will be dearly missed by his family and everyone who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Linda Sue Green Winkelman; 9 children: Troy Edward Rosenburg (Dihan) of FL; Wendy Ellen Coulston of CA; Tracy Ann Berkley of CA; Corey Jay Winkelman (Deborah Ford) of CA; Jason David Rosenburg (Caroline) of GA; Alicia Jenae Terry of UT; Joy Lyn Winkelman (Brent Olenik) of UT; Austin Jay Winkelman of UT; Angela Janelle Winkelman of UT; 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and sister Pamela Rowbotham and (Brent) of Orem, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents Jay William Winkelman and Eathel Lasson Winkelman, sister Eathel Arlene Tidwell, brother-in-law, Newell Tidwell, son-in-law, Steven Reed Terry. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 8, 2024 at the Cascade 1st Ward Chapel, 481 East Center Street, Orem, UT. The family will receive friends at the Berg Orem Chapel, 500 North State Street, Thursday, March 7, from 6-8:00 p.m. and at the church Friday from 10:00-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Graveside interment will follow at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, UT at 3:00 p.m. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.bergmortuary.com.
