Brent Scoville

–

Cedar Valley, Utah

Brent Harmon Scoville was born on May 22, 1957, in Orange, California, to Harmon Groesbeck Scoville and Donna Davis. He was the third of five children, growing up alongside his older siblings Craig and Karen and later welcoming his younger siblings Kristine and Scott.

From an early age, Brent was energetic and full of life. He loved dressing up as a cowboy and playing with toy guns. He learned to swim at a young age and became a strong swimmer, later competing in swimming events and water polo, a passion that would follow him throughout his life.

At age eight, Brent was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by his father. He faithfully advanced in the priesthood, serving as a Deacon, Teacher, Priest, Elder, High Priest, and eventually as a Bishop—twice. His testimony of Jesus Christ guided his life and actions.

At age 19, Brent was called to serve a mission in Sapporo, Japan. He loved the people, the language, and the gospel work he did there. Before and after his mission, he attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he earned a degree in Financial and Estate Planning.

Brent’s professional journey began in Denver, Colorado. He later accepted a position near Seattle, Washington, moving closer to his brother Craig. His sister Karen would eventually join them in the area.

In April 1983, Brent met Deanna Hoggatt at a Young Single Adult dance in Burien, Washington. Their connection was instant and enduring. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Seattle Washington Temple on February 18, 1984. Together, they raised six children: Caleb (1985), Chelsey (1987), Joshua (1990), Jacob (1991), Samuel (1995), and Rachel (1998).

In 1986, Brent and Deanna moved to Vancouver, Washington, where the rest of their children were born. During this time, Brent served faithfully as a Bishop and later as a counselor in the Stake Presidency. In 2009, the family moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where Brent had the opportunity to serve as a Bishop once more—this time in a student ward at BYU-Idaho. He found great joy mentoring and guiding young adults during pivotal times in their lives.

In 2020, Brent and Deanna moved to Lehi, Utah, temporarily living with his brother Scott and sister-in-law Judith while their home was being built in Eagle Mountain. There, Brent continued his lifelong pattern of service, most recently as a counselor in the Elder’s Quorum presidency. Remarkably, he was released from this calling just two days after his passing on May 9, 2025.

While backpacking in the Uinta Mountains in August 2023, Brent began experiencing difficulty breathing. He later learned he had Mesothelioma in the lining of his left lung. He battled the disease for 20 months with courage and determination, undergoing chemotherapy, surgery, immunotherapy, and maintaining a healthy diet. Brent passed away peacefully at home on May 9, 2025, surrounded by family.

We are deeply grateful to the many healthcare professionals, family, and friends who have supported Brent and our family throughout this journey. Your kindness, service, and prayers have meant more than words can express. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.

Brent lived with purpose and passion. He loved his family deeply and found great joy in their successes, growth, and testimonies. He was known for his discipline, positive attitude, and his commitment to health and fitness. Even while battling Mesothelioma, he competed in the Huntsman Senior Games in October 2024—an act he considered his ultimate fight and triumph against the disease.

Brent leaves behind a legacy of faith, perseverance, and love. His life was a quiet sermon of dedication to God, service to others, and unwavering devotion to his family. He will be remembered for his warm smile, kind greetings and the countless lives he touched through leadership, friendship, and example.

He is survived by his wife Deanna, their six children and their spouses, numerous grandchildren, and his beloved siblings.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the Cedar Fort Ward building, 185 East Center Street, Cedar Fort, Utah, 84013. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday, May 16 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and again on Saturday, May 17 from 9:00 am to 9:45 am, prior to the service. Interment will follow at Lehi City Cemetery.
