Carl Boyd

–

Provo, Utah

Carl Boyd was born May 4, 1938 to John and Naomi Lucile Clark Boyd in Oak Creek, CO. He had three brothers, his older brother Jack and little brothers Allen and Alvin who were twins. In 1958, after his junior year of high school, Dad joined the U.S. Army and served in the military police.

Dad married our mother, Shirley Nadine Keele February 9, 1960. They just celebrated their 60th Anniversary. They were blessed with four boys: Dean, Jerry, Bob and Lynn. He built a home with his own hands on a street corner in Provo where they lived their entire lives. In later years he helped in the construction of two of our homes from scratch, sharing his skills with his sons.

Dad worked many different jobs and spent some time working in the mining industry, as a train conductor, car salesman and a security guard, but the most time was spent at Geneva Steel. He worked long hours to provide for us but he never failed to take his family on yearly vacations. We have fond memories of campers, boats, and trailers. He knew how to enjoy life and his family. Dad taught us how to hunt, fish, change oil and many other life skills, but the most valuable lesson was taught by watching how he treated other people. He seemed to know everyone. People always asked us with a smile, “Are you Carl’s son?” It made us proud to say, “Yes”. Dad loved people and they loved him.

His passions in life were God, family, music and trains. He was always singing a song, quoting a poem or cracking a joke. Everyone knew he had arrived when they heard a train whistle. At any given time of the day you may hear the whispering of him talking to God. Dad said his brother Alvin would be the first to meet him at the gates of heaven, and then he would get to see his Dad again. We are glad you are home with Pops; no longer burdened with the pains of this world and look forward to you meeting us when it’s our turn at the gate.

Poem by son, Jerry:
My father was known as the Trainman
had a train whistle stuck in his throat
No matter where he was going
he’d take time to give it a blow
Spent his life singing train songs
he loved entertaining the crowd
In the middle of these train songs
he’d blow that whistle loud!
Truly a strange gift he was given
a gift that his family all loved
I know he’s singing those train songs
in a happier place from above.

Dad was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jack, Allen and Alvin. He is survived by his children: Carl “Dean” Boyd of Orem, UT; Stephen Jared “Jerry” (Jan) Boyd of Provo, UT; William Robert “Bob” Boyd of Orem, UT and Terry “Lynn” (Tami) Boyd of Spanish Fork, UT; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Dad was always in a hurry, and he was always waiting on Mom. 11 days up there is probably a blink of an eye, as dad stood just outside heaven waiting for his “Shirley-girl”. So don’t be sad, this is a beautiful love story where they end up together again and home at last.

Graveside services for Carl and Shirley will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 18, 2020 at Timpanogos Memorial Gardens, 1000 North 400 East, Orem, Utah. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, from 9:00-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the cemetery. Condolences may be expressed at www.bergmortuary.com.
