Clarence Montgomery

–

Provo, Utah

Clarence Montgomery passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at the age of 85 in Provo, Utah. Clarence was born on April 2, 1939, in Kingsport, Tennessee to Clarence (SR) and Janie Montgomery. He grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee and was the eldest of 4 boys.

Clarence graduated from Dobyns Bennett High School in 1957 and later joined the Tennessee National Guard. He then was transferred to the Utah National Guard in 1958. He was activated during the Cuban Crisis and was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington State where he met his sweetheart Sandra Sue Sutter who was working at Fort Lewis. They were married and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1962 where they later had two boys Chris and Marc.

Clarence was discharged from the guard in 1969 where he pursued his dream job at the Woods Cross Police Department. He worked as a police officer for 36 years. He loved the people of Woods Cross and was later assigned as the school resource officer at Woods Cross High School. He acquired a nick name from the students as “Dammit Montgomery” because when he caught the students in the hall and asked them to get to class that’s what they would say to him. It not only became a nick name but it stuck with him forever.

Clarence retired from the Woods Cross Police Department as a lieutenant in 2005. He also was a firefighter for South Davis Fire while working as a police officer. He then became a substitute teacher. He loved working with the students and staff so much that he was later asked by the school to come back as a student tracker. He finally decided to retire from Woods Cross High School in 2019 at the age of 80.

He worked various other jobs while still working as a police officer. He worked at the Salt Palace and later the Delta Center with Utah Jazz security. He was assigned to John Stockton security during Utah Jazz games. He also did private security for Karl Malone. His work ethic was unmatched.

Clarence was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he fulfilled many callings. He served an LDS Mission in California from 1959 to 1961. He also served as a temple worker in the Bountiful Utah Temple. Clarence loved his family and life and lived it to the fullest. He touched so many lives and too many hearts to count. He loved serving others and you could count on him. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for anyone. His southern Tennessee accent and his outgoing, loving spirit drew others to love him even more. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Clarence is survived by his loving wife Sandy, his sons Chris (Leigh) Montgomery of Springville UT, Marc Montgomery of North Salt Lake, UT, 6 grandchildren: Kelsey (Trevor) Townsend, Jordan (Jon) Pickett, Tayvan Montgomery, Alisa Montgomery, Sarah Montgomery, Aiden Montgomery and 7 great grandchildren. Also survived by his 3 brothers John, James and Rex Montgomery. He is preceded in death by his parents.

A special thanks to the loving staff and residents at Cove Point Assisted Living in Provo, UT.
