John Gordon

–

Provo, Utah

John Jeffrey Gordon, 68, of Provo, Utah, passed away peacefully at home on April 27, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He faced ALS with great strength and dignity before his passing.

John was born July 31,1957 in Seattle, Washington, the son of John Bruce Gordon and Maurice Erskine.

John graduated from West Seattle High School in 1975 and went on to attend Brigham Young University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He also obtained his Professional Engineer license. After graduating from BYU, he founded GMH Engineering with Greg Heiner and Chuck Monson.

John was sealed to his best friend for time and all eternity, Darlene E. Deslongchamp, on December 5, 1980, in the Seattle Washington Temple. They moved to Provo, Utah, in 1983, where they raised their six children: Rachel (Cameron) Hermansen, Jay (Rhett) Gordon-Von Roeder, Sarah Gordon, Catherine (Robert) Underwood, William Gordon, and Katie (Cameron) Peterson.

John especially loved working on car engines. Particularly his ’68 Mercury Cougar and racing Capri. He worked on the cars of many friends and family in his home garage. He loved to go hiking and spending time outdoors. He enjoyed designing and engineering his home renovation projects all of which he was able to complete before leaving his earthly home.

John was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a two-year mission in the Italy Rome Mission, where he developed a love for serving others, the gospel, and Italian food. His testimony was strengthened throughout his life as he served in many callings, including Bishop, Young Men’s leader, and Elders Quorum President.

Being a father and grandfather was one of the most beloved callings of his life. His humor, kindness and generosity will live on through his family.

Remaining to cherish John’s memory are his beloved wife, Darlene E. D. Gordon; his children, Rachel (Cameron) Hermansen, Jay (Rhett) Gordon-Von Roeder, Catherine (Robert) Underwood, William Gordon, and Katie (Cameron) Peterson; his grandchildren, Tyler and Sarah Hermansen; Jaxon, Lincoln, and Harrison Underwood; and Paisley Peterson; his sister, Sally Nielson; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sarah Marie Gordon; his parents, Jack and Maurice Gordon; his brother, Bruce Gordon; and his sister, Elizabeth Peterson.

Our family would like to thank all of the caregivers and Belle Vie Hospice team, who cared for Jay over the past 2 years with such love, kindness and respect. We are deeply and forever grateful for all the big and small things you have done for our family.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bonneville Stake Center, 85 South 900 East, Provo, Utah. The service will be immediately followed by a Hawaiian-themed celebration of life for friends and family. Condolences may be shared online at www.bergmortuary.com.
