L. Scott Fitzgerald Obituary (1936

The life and legacy of L’Etrenne Scott Fitzgerald L’Etrenne Scott Fitzgerald, beloved son of Victor Melville and Ruth Scott Fitzgerald, graduated from this earthly life into the waiting arms of family with his cherished wife Geneal Rae (Modeen) by his side on October 3, 2023. Scott was born on June 16, 1936, in a small, white, two room adobe home on the westside of Provo, Utah which was built by his great grandfather. He was welcomed into the family by Ferris Victor, Helen Ruth (Johnson), Ladawn (Farr), Edna May, and then years later his brother Eugene Ralph was born. Scott was a very humble, fun loving, hardworking individual. As a young child he was expected to work to contribute to the family’s income; so, by the age of ten was driving tractors plowing neighbors’ fields so they could plant crops for the fall harvest. His life wasn’t all work, however. He loved to fish, hunt, ride horses, and get into mischief with his friends. When not working or doing various activities, he attended school at Franklin Elementary, Dixon Junior High, Provo High School, and a couple of years at Central Utah Vocational School now known as Utah Valley University to obtain a degree in engineering and then changing to a degree in interior design. It was in a high school English class that Scott first spied Geneal and he fell head-over-heals for her. It was love at first sight. They married on January 16, 1954, in her parent’s front room. Children soon graced their home: Rebecca (Randy) Wells; Vickie Lynn (Matthew) Southwick; Steven Scott (Carrie); Richard Ferris (Kathy); and Kenneth M. (Jode). The family was later joined together for all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 18, 1964. To keep his family fed and housed, Scott first worked for an ice company called Provo Ice and Cold Storage. From there he moved on to Dixon Taylor Russel, a home furniture store on Provo’s main street. Gaining experience in the furniture business he moved his family first to Midvale and then to South Salt Lake and worked for Granite Furniture Company. Scott had a desire to move back to his family home in Provo, so in 1974, he packed up the house and moved. He then obtained a job with Provo School District where he was loved by students, faculty, and staff. Scott was a devoted and dedicated father who taught his children the value of hard work and the value of having fun. Through hard work he taught his children to love nature, care for animals, care for our neighbors, and to be there and support one another. He loved to take his family to the mountains to camp, fish and bond as a family. The family also learned to ride motorcycles, riding in the west deserts of Utah. His family was his greatest treasure. Not only was he a devoted father, but he was also a husband who adored his wife making sure she had the latest kitchen gadget or he would surprise Geneal with a new Christmas ornament and her beloved and cherished Christmas Village houses which he knew she loved. After the children were on their own, Scott and Geneal loved to ride with a motorcycle group on their Goldwing Honda traversing through many states, enjoying friendships and new sites collecting many memories along the way. It was always a special ride when Scott would buy delicate Crystal figurines for Geneal and bringing them home on the motorcycle. Scott and Geneal had many adventures together side-by -side. A legacy of love and dedication was created and will be passed on throughout the generations. Scott is survived by his wife Geneal, five children, many grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and one sister Helen. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at the Ephraim Park Cemetery, 620 North Main Street, Ephraim, Utah. A viewing will be held for family and friends to call and pay one last tribute to this great man at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Monday, October 9 from 6-8:00 p.m. Condolences may be expressed at www.bergmortuary.com.
