Our dearest husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on November 26, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. He was 81 years old.
Leonard K Howell was born in Fairview, Utah on October 13, 1944 to Alice Irene Jensen and Silas Vail Howell. He was the 4th of eight children. He had 2 sisters and five brothers. He grew up in Fairview and graduated from North Sanpete High school. After graduating he moved to Salt Lake where he was called to serve in the Oakland California Mission.
After returning he attended the U of U. He was called to serve as the stake dance instructor to the young adults. However, he did not know how to dance. Being the person that he is and not wanting to turn down a calling and his insatiable love for learning, he studied books on how to dance and taught himself. He went on to serve in that calling for four years. During that time, while he was doing laundry at the laundromat he bumped into a beautiful young lady. He was surprised when she showed up at the home where he was renting a room only to discover that this was her cousin’s home. They quickly hit it off and were married a short time later. Lillian and Leonard were married in the Salt Lake Temple on November 7, 1974. They had 1 girl and 6 boys. He served in many callings in the church. His all-time favorite calling was taking the scouts to scout camp where he spent time with his boys and being outdoors. Throughout the years, he and his family enjoyed camping, hiking, and boating. You could catch them in the backyard at almost any time playing a game of baseball or having a very wet water fight. Dad could do almost anything he put his mind to. He had a love for learning and was the hardest worker ever.
As a dedicated educator and scout leader, Leonard spent his life shaping young minds in his community as well as his own family.
He will always be remembered as a gentle giant—a man whose quiet strength, kind heart, and deep sense of service defined his life. Whether helping a neighbor, supporting his family, or offering guidance to his students, he gave freely and without hesitation. His commitment to his family was unwavering, and his influence will continue to echo through generations.
Leonard is survived by his devoted wife, Lillian Scott Howell, daughter, Emily (Sheldon) Laird; and 6 sons: Anthony (Shawn), Daniel (Emily), Rusty, Sterling (Carrie), Edward (Jessica), Hans (Seini); brother, Steven (Debbie) Howell, 18 wonderful grandchildren and 3 sisters in law.
His family was the center of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Leonard’s legacy is one of love, service, and gentle strength. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
