Ned Allred

–

Provo, Utah

Born February 27, 1927, Ned was the third of Royal L and Elva Mortensen Allred’s four children. Ned was uncommonly close to his siblings. They worked the farm raising alfalfa and sheep, and fishing, hunting, and playing sports together. Legend has it the Sanpete County Sheriff once got involved when someone was foolish enough to put the Allred boys on separate baseball teams. When the opposing teams played each other, a fight broke out and it became clear that Royal, Roger, and Ned were brothers first and teammates second. They were always assigned to the same team after that.

Ned graduated from North Sanpete High School in 1945 where he played basketball, football and baseball, and was voted Student Body President and Athlete of the Year. Ned made friendships in his hometown and high school which lasted his whole life.

Drafted into the U.S. Army immediately after graduation, he was posted in the Aleutian Islands for two and a half years, after which he served two and a half more as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Kingdom of Samoa.

When he returned after his five years of service, he found the love of his life, JoAnn Peterson still (im)patiently waiting for him. They were married September 10, 1953 in the Manti, Utah Temple.

Ned and JoAnn are the parents of four children: Alison (Rex) Infanger, Kip Ned (Barbara), Wendy (Wayne) Olsen, and Jenn (Matt) Park. Ned was stubbornly incorrigible when it came to spoiling their 14 grandkids, making sure they were always supplied with ice cream and soda, a tradition he continued to his very last days with their 21 great grandchildren.

Originally intending to be a pilot, Ned’s love of the children he met in Samoa eventually led him to pursue a career in elementary education. He attended Snow College and later Brigham Young University, earning a B.A. in Education and an M.S. in Recreation Management. He earned his Teaching Certificate in 1957 and began teaching 6th grade first in Tooele and then in the Provo School District where he became an administrator and later a principal. All told, he spent more than 30 years teaching and serving children at Joaquin, Provost, Maeser, and Wasatch Elementary Schools.

Ned was fastidious in caring for the home he built for his family, and maintaining a meticulous yard and beautiful gardens, which for six decades churned out the most delicious tomatoes and peaches known to man. He was an avid sportsman — hiking, hunting, fishing, and golfing, including twice being inducted into the Royal Order of the River Rats. He was also a dyed-in-the-wool BYU sports fan, whether in the stadium, working in the shop or the yard, or relaxing in his recliner, he never missed a game.

After retirement, Ned and JoAnn traveled the world, including taking more than a dozen cruises, many of which were in the company of Ned and JoAnn’s lifelong friends. This group, called the “SanPeters,” played, traveled, dined, served, and loved together for seven decades; Ned never talked about this group without acknowledging how fortunate he was to have such wonderful people share so much of his life.

Ned’s quiet, steady, and determined love is evident in the many relationships which lasted his whole life. He always sought to recognize others and to lift them up— qualities which were especially evident throughout his lifelong service in the Church— as a missionary, scout leader, bishop, high councilman, bishop (again), temple worker, and in the mission he and JoAnn served in Oakland, California from 1989-1990. He also spent decades helping care every week for ailing loved ones with quiet kindness and gentle good humor.

Ned passed away peacefully and at home on September 4, 2025 after a short illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Royal N and Roger, his sister Leila Ruth, and his daughter Jenn.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Provo Peaks 6th Ward Chapel, 1456 East 300 North, Provo, Utah. The family will receive friends from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment and a graveside service will be that afternoon in the Mount Pleasant, Utah cemetery. Condolences may be extended online at www.bergmortuary.com.

In lieu of flowers, please remember Ned by planting a garden, having some ice cream, cheering for the Cougars, and quietly, consistently loving those around you.
