Reginald Hughes

–

Provo, Utah

Reggie Hughes passed away surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy of deep devotion to his wife, his children, his faith, and the people he encountered every day.

At the center of his life was his beloved wife, Janet Hughes. Their marriage was a steady partnership built on faith, service, and deep mutual respect. Together, they created a home where family came first, and regularly opened their home to others who needed a good meal and a campfire to sit by. Reggie’s greatest joy was being a husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his children: Robert Hughes, Jennifer Hughes, Jonathan Hughes, Daniel Hughes, Jelene Hughes, Elaine Hughes Atkinson, and Sarah Hughes Goddard. He was preceded in death by his son, Scott Hughes, whose memory remained close to his heart.

Reggie valued family above all else. After moving from Canada to the United States with his parents, he carried a lifelong longing for connection, which he fulfilled by building a close and loving family of his own. Gatherings were especially meaningful to him, and he relished time spent with his children and grandchildren, whether fishing, talking about their lives, or simply being together. He took a sincere interest in each person, always asking about their work, their hobbies, and what mattered to them.

His faith in Jesus Christ was woven naturally into his daily life. He strived to live as the Savior taught, offering kindness, humility, and grace to others, and seeking to follow the Lord’s will in all things. Even during the health difficulties he faced near the end of his life, he expressed gratitude for these difficulties, saying he thanked God for the experience he had been given.

Reggie and Janet served a three-year “mission” together at the Slate Canyon Youth Center, where they touched many lives. He also served faithfully in his church, including as a bishop and a teacher. In every role, he saw others as equals, offering compassion without judgment.

He had a gift for making people feel seen. Whether on a walk or in passing, he greeted everyone with a warm smile and a simple hello. He believed in caring for both body and spirit, maintaining a lifelong love of exercise and the outdoors.

Reggie often spoke of the lessons he learned from his parents, Harold and Alva Hughes, who taught him the value of hard work and responsibility from a young age. As a boy, he cared for dozens of rabbits and other animals, learning early that responsibilities came first - a principle that stayed with him throughout his life.

A defining moment in his life came in 1986, when he was involved in a serious accident that led to a near-death experience and a long, difficult recovery. This event deepened his devotion to the Savior and gave him a desire to share his testimony of God’s love for all of His children. He said that the greatest lesson he learned from this experience was that we are here on Earth to serve each other, and everything else is secondary.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 15, 2026 at the Slate Canyon 6th Ward Chapel, 1315 East 900 South, Provo, Utah. The family will receive friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will follow in the Provo City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended online at www.bergmortuary.com.
