Sherlan "Sweed" Ligman Obituary (1945

Sherlan “Sweed” Duane Ligman, age 75, of Provo, Utah, died peacefully at home on August 21, his 75th birthday, of pancreatic cancer. Sweed was born in Orem, Utah, on August 21, 1945, to Clarence J. Ligman and Myrtle Irene Beard Ligman. He had a happy childhood and attended Provo schools. He had one brother, Gary Williams, and one sister, Arlene Elder, as well as a half-sister, Delphine Parsons. He married Patricia Mercer in 1969, and they were married 51 years. They have five children: Amy Camara (Jon), Natalie Garcia (Jason), Shannon Stander (Robert), Matthew Ligman (Melissa), and Cameron Ligman. Sweed and Pat also have eight grandchildren: Aspen Stander Moore (Adam), Kaleb Stander, Skyler Stander, Zac Camara, Tyler Camara, Noah Garcia, Christian Garcia, and Kai Garcia. Sweed graduated from Provo High School in 1963 and then served in the Army Reserve for two and a half years. His most rewarding and memorable jobs were working in the auto industry, and he retired from State Farm Insurance at age 55 with a medical retirement. For the last 20 years, while sometimes battling health challenges, Sweed enjoyed restoring old cars, staying active by walking and going to the Provo Recreational Center, hosting frequent family gatherings, visiting with friends, and taking day trips riding his side-by-side with Pat, family, and great friends. Sweed endured heart disease for the last 30 years of his life. Although his heart was weak, it was big and full of love for his family and friends. His family was his pride and joy, and he loved family get-togethers and often reached out to one of his kids when he was feeling like an empty nester. He helped all of his children with buying homes, fixing cars, and learning how to do home improvements and maintenance, and he always gave great advice. He was so proud of each of his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren. He loved attending sporting events to support his grandchildren, as well as choir performances for his one granddaughter. Sweed had an exceptional ability for making and keeping friends from many walks of life. Over the last ten years he met many great people at McDonald’s. The “Mac Pack” became some of his dearest friends whom he cherished spending time with, including going on short trips and side-by-side rides. His friends made his last years memorable and enjoyable. Sweed was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a quiet faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ. His parents and his sister, brother, and half-sister preceded him in death. Sweed is survived by his loving wife, five children, eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. We believe he's having a grand reunion with all his family and friends who have passed on before him. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 27, 2020 at the Grandview 10th Ward Chapel, 1600 North 1880 West, Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Wednesday, August 26, from 6-8:00 p.m. and at the church Thursday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services.
