Shirley "Shirl" Elmer Bishop Obituary (1922

Shirl Bishop passed away at his home in Provo, Utah, October 15, 2017. He was born January 25, 1922, to Raymond Spencer and Annie Maria Hilton Bishop at their home in Delta, Utah. Shirl was the fifth son in a family of six boys followed by two girls. After graduating from Delta High School, he attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan for two years before enlisting in the Army Aviation Cadet program. When called to active duty during WWII, he trained as an aerial navigator. After receiving his commission, he was assigned as a navigation instructor for a year. Then he transferred to a B-29 squadron, flying missions out of Guam during the last few months of the war. Upon his discharge, he immediately returned to school at Utah State. His first night back, he met Doris Ann Johnson at a dance. They married in the Logan Temple on June 19, 1947. After graduation, he taught Vocational Agriculture at Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah for three years, after which he was recalled to serve on active duty in the Air Force during the Korean War. His last duty station was March Airforce Base near Riverside, CA, where he was involved with tracking the movement of the radioactive clouds from atom bomb tests in Nevada. Following his discharge, Shirl and his family stayed in Riverside, where he worked for the University of California Agricultural Extension Service for the next 32 years, first as the 4-H Club Advisor and, after a sabbatical where he earned a Master's Degree in animal nutrition, as the Dairy Farm Advisor for 4 southern California counties. Following his retirement in 1986, he and Doris Ann settled in Provo, Utah. His service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has included ward and stake Young Men's presidencies, counselor to two stake presidents, president of the Riverside, California Stake, and a temple sealer in the Washington DC and Provo temples. Shirl and Doris Ann served two missions: first to the New York Rochester Mission, where they served as the office couple and part-time at the Hill Cumorah Vistors Center; and second, to the Washington DC Temple. Shirl also served a church service mission as a welfare agent (itinerant bishop). Shirl and Doris Ann were married for 70 years. She passed away July 4, 2017. Shirl is survived by four children: Gail (Jerry) Argetsinger in Rochester, NY; Anne (Dennis) Heaston in Provo, UT; Karen (Kent) Mikkelsen in Kensington, MD; and Russell (Scarlett) Bishop in Pembroke Pines, FL. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held from 2:30-3:30 p.m., Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the Brigham City Cemetery, 300 East 300 South, Brigham City, UT 84302. A visitation will be held from 2-4:00 p.m., Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 E. Center Street, Provo, Utah.
