Steven Bird Miller, born January 14,1957 to Melvin M. and Ardith Bird Miller in Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, at Medallion Manor in Provo, UT at the age of 69.
He will joyfully be reunited with his parents Mel and Ardith, brother Jim, sister Sharon, brothers-in-law Ken Sommerfeld and Dick Hollingsworth and many other relatives on the other side who are celebrating his return home to Heavenly Father and his Savior Jesus Christ.
Steven was involved in a car accident when he was 3 years old that resulted in brain damage and caused him to be afflicted with seizures throughout his life. He attended a special school in Denver to help him learn how to work and live with his disabilities. During part of that time, he lived with his sister Bev and his brother-in-law Ken. He also has resided in several group homes throughout the years and was able to work at Deseret Industries and several other establishments.
Steven always had a great desire to be self-reliant. He worked hard to make that happen. Because of this at one point he was able to live in an apartment on his own for a while. Sadly, while cooking bacon on a gas stove, he had a seizure. The edge of the towel he had thrown over his shoulder to help him while cooking caught fire and caused 2nd and 3rd degree burns on most of his body. Like the other challenges he faced in his life, he faced the burn healing process with great courage and stoicism.
Steven was a wonderful, loving and kind, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He loved to be with his family playing games, watching movies, doing puzzles, boating, fishing (especially with Dick and Ken), and just chilling. He enjoyed swimming, loved the Hardy Boys book series, any John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, or western movie and recently started watching the mystery series Murder She Wrote. He was very fond of collecting keys, pens, tackle boxes, Hardy Boy Books, western movies or adventure movies, playing cards, and sunglasses.
Steven also enjoyed playing basketball and baseball with his friends from his group home Mesa Vista in Orem, UT where he lived for over 23 years. His last home was at Medallion Manor in Provo, UT.
We are so thankful for the great care, amazing service, and love shared with our Stevie by all the nurses, directors, and caretakers through the years. A special thanks to the staff at Mesa Vista and Medallion Manor as well as to Karen Root, Paul Ika, and Ashley Haws. Steve loved and cherished you all.
Steven is survived by his three sisters, Beverly Sommerfeld (Ken), Pat Hollingsworth (Dick), Margo Feller (Jack) and many, many, nieces and nephews and other relatives. We would like to thank our Kirby (nephew) and Stacey (niece) Sommerfeld and their children who have taken care of him and made him a part of their family for many years.
We want to share this thought sent to us by Jack’s brother, Kelly Feller, about Steve:
“Steven fought a good fight, finished the course and kept the faith. He was a wounded warrior who has always impressed us with his happy persistence. What a great arrival into a state of happiness called paradise, a place of peace where he can rest from all his troubles and from all care, and sorrow.”
We will miss you our sweet Stevie. We will miss your twinkling eyes that would light up any time you were delighted with something. We will miss your happy smile and cute little smirk, your sweet spirit and humble attitude that made us all want to be a better person because of you. We will miss how you never would hide your joy when you received a good hand of cards or when, in a movie, you would shout out a loud “woohoo!” for the good guys! You have inspired so many people, and you are loved by so many people on both sides of the veil.
Steven will be honored and his life celebrated on Saturday March 21, 2026, in his ward chapel located at 1560 South 1100 West Provo, UT 84601. Viewing is at 9:30 am with the service to follow at 10:30 am. Interment will be in the Elysian Burial Gardens located at 1075 East 4580 South (College Street) Millcreek, Utah 84117 at approximately 12:00 noon.
