Susan Kathleen Alexander was born October 4th, 1949, in Rapid City, South Dakota, and passed away on April 10th, 2025, in Saratoga Springs, Utah. “Sue”, born to Wallace and Dorothy Horton, spent her childhood in California, Louisiana, Texas, Nebraska, and Virginia (as part of an ever-moving Air Force family). She graduated from Woodson High School in Fairfax, Virginia, and later from Radford College. Although Sue had quite a few passions and interests, music and service were the driving forces in her life, both of which she used to inspire and uplift others.
Sue first saw “Oklahoma” on the big screen in 5th grade and became a lifelong fan of musicals. She learned to play piano at a young age and often accompanied her middle school and high school choirs. She also joined the varsity debate team and loved it (to no surprise). Her first job was teaching accordion lessons as a teenager, but her official career in music began in 1971. “Ms. A” would dedicate the next 33 years as a public school teacher and gifted choral director, spending her most memorable tenures at Fairfax High School and Rachel Carson Middle School in northern Virginia. This enriching career included several highlights: playing piano on the Presidential Yacht, touring Europe with her high school students, directing choirs at the White House, singing at the Kennedy Center, and performing with Robert Shaw in Carnegie Hall (one of her proudest achievements). But above all else, Sue was committed to empowering and strengthening her students - both inside and outside the classroom - and guiding them to discover their own unique potential. She adored her students and often spoke of their successes long after graduation.
Since moving to Utah in 2005, Sue dedicated her time and effort to various noble causes. She accepted a 2-year call as a service missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2009, helping others discover the power of genealogy in the Family History Library. She later helped start the Saratoga Springs Library and served as its first director from 2011 to 2013. She spent countless hours as an organist and choir director for the LDS Church, both at the ward and stake level, impacting others through the spirit of sacred music. Sue also served as pianist to several high school students in preparation for their concerts and recitals. She was known for her kind and generous heart, often donating to local nonprofits and extending support to those in need. She strived to be Christlike in all aspects of her life.
In light of all her wonderful accomplishments, Sue was most proud of her family and the respective achievements of each individual. She leaves behind her two children (whom she loved with all her heart) and their spouses: Wade & Tania Alexander and Katey & Tom Mostoller; her brother Brent; her grandchildren Jeff, Tyler, Skylar, Dallin, Keeley, and Kendall; her great-grandchildren Sophia, Aubree, Addilyn and Kace. She was an incredible mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend. To those with whom Sue worked and served these past several decades, she loved and respected you all as brothers and sisters. Now in heaven, there is no doubt that Sue is either directing a choir of angels, reading a good book, or volunteering for the HOA.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the Saratoga Springs Utah Crossroads Stake Center located at 368 W Aspen Hills Blvd (Saratoga Springs, Utah). Condolences may be extended online at www.bergmortuary.com.
