Vaudis Allen Johnson Obituary (1925

Vaudis Allen Johnson, 88, from Provo, Utah, died on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, after a brief illness. She was the second child born to Frank Lee and Ora "D" Wardle Allen, in Ogden, Utah on September 28, 1925. As a young adult, Vaudis worked for a candy company where she learned to dip chocolates. Making candy and dipping chocolates became hobbies Vaudis enjoyed her whole life. She liked to eat one chocolate, and only one, every day. At the age of (21), Vaudis was called on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in the Western States mission. After she was released, she met her future husband, Hyrum Gardner Johnson at a missionary reunion. Vaudis and Hyrum were sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan, Utah Temple on September 16, 1949. They are the parents of five children, Colleen, Elaine, Arlene, Nellie D and Norman. The Johnson family lived in Paul, Idaho, Logan, Utah, Moscow, Idaho, and Preston, Idaho before settling in Paris, Idaho, where Hyrum worked as a County Extension Agent for Bear Lake County. While living in Paris, Vaudis spent much of her time passing on her homemaking skills to her children. They learned to sew, knit, crochet, cook, can fruits and vegetables, work in the garden and make bread. Vaudis made at least one batch of bread every week while raising her family. It was in Paris that Vaudis learned to quilt. Her quilts have been given to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She shared her love of sewing and quilting with her children and grandchildren. After Hyrum retired, they moved to Ogden to be closer to her mother, Ora. Vaudis lovingly cared for her mother until Ora died. Vaudis also gave the same loving care to Hyrum during several years of illness. Hyrum died in November of 1985. In the 28 years since Hyrum died, Vaudis worked in a doctor’s office, served a second mission for the LDS church in the Independence, Missouri Mission, and spent many hours helping and sharing her talents with family, neighbors, friends and her church. In 2005, Vaudis moved to Provo, Utah to be closer to family. Her great-grandchildren will remember the two dollar bill she loved to include with their birthday cards. Her grandchildren will remember a grandma who was always willing to read a story, watch "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", or provide a special treat for them. When you walked into her apartment at Cove Point, you noticed the pictures of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the wall and the well-worn scriptures on the table by her favorite chair. Those were the things she loved. Vaudis' children will remember her loading and unloading the dishwasher and folding laundry during her visits. They will also remember a mother who taught them to serve others and the Lord by her example. Vaudis is survived by her children, Colleen (Gary) Olsen, Roswell, Georgia; Elaine (Clif) Conner, Fair Oaks, Texas; Arlene (Kelly) Olsen, Provo, Utah; Nellie D (Kevin) Andersen, Boise, Idaho; and Norman (Jung) Johnson, Alpharetta, Georgia, 20 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and her sister, Noma (Lawrence) Bowman, Provo, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Audrey, Lee and Mark. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 East Center Street, Provo, Utah. Friends may call from 10-10:50 a.m. prior to services.
