Vernon "Vern" Asael Barrett Obituary (1935

Vernon Asael Barrett, 88, father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away on March 6, 2024 in Syracuse, Utah. Vern was born November 3, 1935 in Provo, Utah to Asael Eugene Barrett and Roxena Lavern Waterlyn. Vern had a wonderful childhood growing up in Provo, catching fish in Utah Lake, hiking in the nearby hills, and riding his bicycle all over the valley. He graduated from Provo High School in 1955 and attended Brigham Young University—graduating in 1969 with a degree in Geology/History. Vern also proudly served his country in the Utah National Guard. Vern was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various capacities, including as a full-time missionary to the Gulf States Mission (1956-1958) and ward clerk. He was also known as a very diligent and attentive home teacher. Vern was an avid beekeeper and filled the role of State Bee Inspector for many years. Vern had a lovely tenor singing voice and loved singing everywhere. He especially enjoyed singing while working in the honey house. Some might even say his singing made the honey sweeter! Vern loved to hike and explore and make new friends everywhere he went. Even in his later years, he would go off exploring, finding new adventures and many new rocks to bring home to his collection. Vern was married to Sybil Nielsen (later divorced) in 1969. To this union were born eight children: William Barrett (Donna), David Barrett (Kim), Helen Brandt (Dan), Jefferson Barrett (Jessica), Golden Barrett (Sarah), Emelie Lasson (Craig), Anna Lloyd (Adam) and Esther Leavitt (Trent). Also added to this marriage were two stepchildren that he cared for, Owen Richardson (Amy) and Carolyn Richardson. He loved his large family and worked very hard to provide for their needs. Vern is survived by his sisters, Charlene Miller and Lila (Paul) Ellerton, and his brother Boyd K Barrett (Joan). He is also survived by each of his children and their spouses, 30 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Asael Eugene Barrett and Roxena Lavern Waterlyn, his sister Margene Brereton, his brother Richard Barrett, and his brother-in-law Harry Miller. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at the Syracuse Utah Bluff Stake Center, 2339 West 1900 South, Syracuse, Utah. The family will receive friends at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Monday, March 11, from 6-8:00 p.m. and at the church Tuesday, from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services.
