Zelma Zona Naught Hathaway Obituary (1916

Wow, what a woman! Zelma Zona Naught Hathaway, age 99, died December 11, 2015, after nearly a century of earthly life. Zelma was born to Elbert and Sophronia Naught on April 15, 1916. The eighth of nine children, Zelma was raised on a farm in Northern California. As a child she bathed in the river behind the family home and picked berries to help support the family. In 1932, Zelma married Kenneth Hathaway, with whom she had her only child, Mark G. Hathaway. Zelma and Kenneth later divorced. Zelma lived in Oregon, Kansas, South Carolina, and Southern California before ultimately settling in Utah to be near her son and his family. A world class grandmother, Zelma helped tend several of her grandchildren, including twin great-grandsons when she was 80 years old. Grandchildren loved to have sleepovers with Grandma because she would fix special request breakfasts. Industrious, punctual, and diligent, Zelma was recognized for hard work at the many jobs she had in her long life; these included being a riveter in WWII and a seamstress. Her favorite position was at the BYU dairy, where she served as a store manager for 12 years before retiring. As a young woman, Zelma worked as a housekeeper and nanny for President Howard W. Hunter and his family. She was introduced to the LDS faith at this time, and she joined the church after moving to Utah. Always lively and active, Zelma parasailed at Lake Powell at age 78, hiked in Zion National Park at age 90, enjoyed road trips and always had a suitcase packed and ready to go, and she especially loved to dance. Zelma is survived by her son, Mark (Dona Rae) Hathaway; grandchildren: Robyn (Eric) Adams, Kristi Chaney, Dana Dever, Scott (Deanne) Hathaway, Bashaan (John) Paystrup, and Marti Rachelle Hathaway; 17 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Our family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Orem Park 6th Ward. Sunday was Zelma’s favorite day, due to the extra effort of ward members and home teachers who helped her attend church each week and sit in her “special” chair. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, December 18, 2015, in the Park 6th Ward Chapel, 114 South 400 West, Orem, Utah. Family and friends may visit Friday morning from 10:00 until 11:40 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be at Eastlawn Memorial Hills, Provo.
